Week 8 has arrived very quickly it seems? Please see details later in this newsletter and the weekly Tintacs on Facebook on our busy school calendar. Please note some changes to parade times at days due to athletics carnivals.Â
School Community Support
Recently the Dept of Education marked Guidance Week. Our Guidance Officer Mr Shane Brogden is here Wednesdays to Fridays and works with students, staff and families to support student engagement and achievement.Â
Last week was Chaplaincy Week across Australia. Thanks to a federal grant and school community fundraising through the Colour Run we are able to have Chappy Amanda 2 days a week. Chappy conducts a variety of YCDI activities through the school year as well as providing student, staff and parent support; and of course coming up with Kindness Challenges to enrich our school community. Â
Keys to Success- Organisation.
At Tinana school, we believe that fostering independence and self-responsibility in students includes the little things—like managing their own school bags.  Teachers set up routines for bag racks and give students time and space to do this during the day. Students putting their bag away and carrying their own school bag as much as possible is a simple routine that helps build essential organisational skills, reinforces personal responsibility, and gives students a sense of ownership over their belongings. The This is also one of the reasons we ask that pick up people wait away from the classroom, this may be a Covered play area, the Front Gate or seating areas in between. We appreciate your support in allowing your child the space to manage this task independently—it’s a small step with a big impact on their development.
The organisation key is our YCDI focus at the start of term 3.
Tuckshop Refurbishment
The tuckshop refurbishment is expected to start next term. While the tuckshop will be temporarily closed during the renovation period, we’ll keep you updated on alternative services and reopening dates.  We look forward to being able to welcome volunteers to a more efficient and modernised space (including new air conditioning!).
School Security – CCTV installation
On Monday another trespass report had to be made by office staff after the Yarning circle was disturbed. Due to ongoing security issues, some of which have included break ins and damage, the Qld Dept of Education have commenced the installation of CCTV throughout the school monitoring outdoor areas and approaches to buildings and infrastructure. The footage will be used strictly in accordance with privacy guidelines and departmental policies. It is expected that these cameras will become operational over the school holidays. There will be further details in the Week 10 newsletter and at the June P&C Meeting on Tuesday June 24, 2025.

MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL
Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school for any purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the office and is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade and particular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly marked on the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are available at the office for any payments. Parents that prefer to deposit the funds directly into the school bank account are requested to advise the office of the deposit and to use the student surname and invoice number as the payment reference. As large amounts of money pass through the school office it becomes difficult and time consuming to identify payments without this information.
Invoices via Email
You should now be receiving all your child’s invoices via email. If you need to provide the office with an updated email address, please do so as soon as possible, as some school notes and information will also be sent via email.Â
REFLECTION LETTERS are also being sent out via e-mail.
ABSENCES
Please Phone 4120 8066 and leave a message on the Absence Line in the event of a student being absent. Please phone each day your child is absent from school unless the office has been previously advised of the absence. Verbal messages by the student are not sufficient. This prevents any misunderstanding and ensures the safety of your child. Please note that, by law, we are required to report any long term unexplained absences from school which may then be investigated by the police. Â
Â
LATE ARRIVAL
The school day begins at 8:45am and all staff will begin instruction at this time. Arrivals after 8:45am are considered to be late. Late arrival should be accompanied by a note but parents may ring the office with this information. Students must first report to the office to obtain a late slip that is to be given to their teacher.
EARLY ARRIVALS
Please be aware that there are NO staff members on duty before 8 am. We have more students arriving before this time. If there is a legitimate reason for students to be at school before 8am, then contact the office to make arrangements. These students must then follow the rules by sitting quietly at the far end of the Administration Building.
SMS NOTIFICATION
The school is now utilising an SMS system to notify parents of any unexplained absence. If you receive a text message stating your child’s absence is unexplained, you can reply via text, stating your child’s name, and reason for absence. If you believe your child should be present at school, please phone the office immediately on 4120 8000.
Â
EARLY DEPARTURE
Children leaving school early must be picked up from the office. Parents may ring in advance to arrange for their child/ren to be ready for collection, or send a note to the class teacher. Your child will be given an early departure slip from the office. Please minimise disruptions to teaching and learning by organising early departures in advance and for break times.Â
Student Attendance - Same Day Absence Notification
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department of Education and for the Queensland Government.
At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parent or carer via text message when a student's absence is unexplained after the first roll marking of the day.
As home and school work together, student safety will be increased. Here are some guidelines to make this process more efficient:
- Notify the school by phone, QParents or email before 9:00am if your student is going to be absent that day. Please give a brief explanation for the absence.
- If you receive a text message regarding an unexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text, QParents or phone call.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone number and other contact details are up-to-date on the school records. This is critical, as we need to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
- If your student arrives late to school, they must go to the office for a late pass before going to their classroom. If they are leaving early, a leave pass must be obtained from the office.

Chappy Week:
This week we celebrated National School Chaplaincy Week. It was 18 years ago now that I left my former career and joined the Tinana SS community as their first (and only so far) Chappy. WHAT AN HONOUR!!! One of the many things I genuinely appreciate about our community is how wonderfully it has embraced the Chaplaincy program. I have included an infographic with what it is that a school Chappy does based on our last McCrindle survey.

Grade 6 Camp
Camps are one of my favourite parts of school life. I appreciate the time we get to spend with the students in a context outside of the classroom and playground. It’s a time for different students to shine but a time for us all to push ourselves to try new things. I know the sacrifice it is to send your student on camp but from my perspective, the opportunities afforded our students are immeasurable – they will have memories that last a lifetime. I was showing my youngest (now in her mid twenties) some photos of Graham on the Flying Possum and just moments later she disappeared into her stock of hard drives and pulled out the video of her year 7 camp on the same apparatus. She still values that camp over a decade later.
A massive shout out must go to our school staff for the extra work that goes into camp.  The staff at Chaverim told me that we are still in their ‘Top 5 best schools.’ This is a title that different cohorts of year 6 staff have maintained over the years I have been a part of camp. Well done to our staff.
Â
150th Celebrations.
What a magnificent day. We have a great turn out and loads of positive comments from community members. I loved hearing all the stories and past staff and students reminisced on times of old. Well done and a HUGE congratulations to those involved.

PLAY AT THE POWERHOUSE
Play at the Powerhouse has become popular and any new mums are more than welcome. We have overtaken the space that was once MAD Providore and set it up as a permanent ‘Bump In’ space from 9:30. We then move to a new space for our welcome song, story and a short group activity before opening a third area with fine motor and gross motor activities. Each week has a theme and each term has a play goal – our goal for this term is ‘TAKING TURNS.’ Turn taking is an important skill children learn before they develop oral language and it also helps with helping little ones understand the concept of sharing.
Playgroup runs 9:30-11:00 at the Powerhouse community centre. I have included some photos of our area including our ball pit, our car table, some of our activities, our baby area and our coffee space.

Kaitlin representing Maryborough in 10 to 12 year old softball at the Wide Bay trials held in week 6. Well done!

An update on the Tuckshop refurbishment, the successful tender applicant has been chosen and we are just waiting for a start date (we may have one at time of publication). Therefore we will be running stock down in the lead up to this work. I will you all updated on our Facebook page and in Qkr.
As for Tuckshop during the refit, we are putting together some possible workarounds and will keep everyone informed.
I will be needing some additional volunteers for when the Tuckshop is completed (and now to be honest), as we have lost a few to new work commitments. A massive congratulations to those volunteers. (We've often joked that if you want to change your work situation, volunteer in Tuckshop haha). Every time you volunteer in the Tuckshop, you get an entry into the monthly gift voucher from one our great local suppliers. Murdoch and Tricia won May's draw, which was a $25 voucher from Fraser Coast Food Service. This Husband and wife team not only have 2 granddaughters at Tinana but their daughter works here too. Congratulations and a massive thankyou to Murdoch and Tricia and a big thankyou to all our volunteers, our children would not get to enjoy tuckshop.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the tuckshop.Â
