Tinana students have made a smooth start to the term. Our focus on helping all students #doyourbest was particularly evidenced at the school Anzac Services, Tinana Dawn Service and Town March. Thank you to parents/carers who were able to attend the School Service and/or support their children to be part of commemorations on Anzac Day. For the first time the Senior Performance Team was part of a combined choir for the Town Service which I hope will be a new tradition for school choirs moving forward. A special thank you to veteran and school parent Mr Bronsen Mitchell who stepped in a as guest speaker for the School Service on very short notice.
Cross Country Presentations
This Friday’s parade will be at 2.30pm to include Cross Country Presentations.
Volunteer Assistance
Our school thrives on the active involvement of our community, and we are incredibly grateful for the time and effort many of you already dedicate to supporting our students and staff; either with your time or donations. This Saturday the P&C Association is holding a sausage sizzle at the Hall between 10 and 1pm. This week you will also receive an email requesting volunteer time for the 150th Open Morning (Saturday May 31 8.30am-11.30am) also see link below. It is acknowledged that this is a busy time of year for weekend sport and any time you can spare, even if 30 minutes would be appreciated.
The P&C Association held it's monthly meeting last night and finalised plans for the Mothers' Day Stall along with the Sausage Sizzle. There was also discussions about the still vacant Treasurer position and next steps if this position is not filled by the end of May which is when all state schools advise the Dept of Education of P&C Executive members fo the year.
150th Commemoration- School Song.
A school song has been written as part of 150th commemorations. The Senior Performance Team have started learning the song to be part of a special recording session with ‘The Song Man’ Mr Josh Arnold who will be here on May 22. The lyrics are printed later in this newsletter along with a link to a backing track for any student who would like to learn the song to be able to practice at home. We are also in need of a song title which students will hear more about on parade this Friday.
Dept of Education Image Library
From time to time, staff the Dept of Education Image Library organises photo shoots to reflect the variety of state schools around Qld that they then use in various promotional materials (eg websites, presentations, dept documents). Tinana has been selected for one of these photos shoots with the theme of student and staff diversity. This photo shoot will take place on May 15. Students in the classes that have been selected to take part will take home a project consent form that is different to the usual school permission forms. This is because the images are retained for long term use. These forms need to be returned to the class teacher and will be collected on the day. If parents/carers receive a project consent from for their student and have any queries, please email admin@tinanass.eq.edu.au and someone will be in touch.
New in 2025 – Prep sibling Enrolments
Last term we collected student information for those school families who will have a student in Prep in 2026. This year there is an opportunity to streamline the Prep 2026 enrolment for siblings by participating in an After School Siblings Enrolment Meeting. These will take place between 3.15- 4pm and will include a small group of future Preps being able to visit a Prep classroom and play on the playground while paperwork is finalised. The Prep 2026 Open Morning will still be taking place in Term 3 and future Prep students will receive an invitation to the U8s event in Term 3. This is an additional opportunity for parents to take up. To be able to register for these afternoons, please return your completed enrolment paperwork as soon as possible as the first After School Siblings Enrolment Mtg will be held in June.
Bakers' Delight Community Support
From this week Bakers' Delight from Station Square will be donating a 'lunchbox' loaf to class groups. Each student will take home a loaf of bread and a 4 week VIP card. We will be starting with composite classes from oldest to youngest and then straight year levels. If your student is gluten free someone from the office will be in touch about arrangements.

MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL
Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school for any purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the office and is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade and particular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly marked on the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are available at the office for any payments. Parents that prefer to deposit the funds directly into the school bank account are requested to advise the office of the deposit and to use the student surname and invoice number as the payment reference. As large amounts of money pass through the school office it becomes difficult and time consuming to identify payments without this information.
Invoices via Email
You should now be receiving all your child’s invoices via email. If you need to provide the office with an updated email address, please do so as soon as possible, as some school notes and information will also be sent via email.
REFLECTION LETTERS are also being sent out via e-mail.
ABSENCES
Please Phone 4120 8066 and leave a message on the Absence Line in the event of a student being absent. Please phone each day your child is absent from school unless the office has been previously advised of the absence. Verbal messages by the student are not sufficient. This prevents any misunderstanding and ensures the safety of your child. Please note that, by law, we are required to report any long term unexplained absences from school which may then be investigated by the police.
LATE ARRIVAL
The school day begins at 8:45am and all staff will begin instruction at this time. Arrivals after 8:45am are considered to be late. Late arrival should be accompanied by a note but parents may ring the office with this information. Students must first report to the office to obtain a late slip that is to be given to their teacher.
EARLY ARRIVALS
Please be aware that there are NO staff members on duty before 8 am. We have more students arriving before this time. If there is a legitimate reason for students to be at school before 8am, then contact the office to make arrangements. These students must then follow the rules by sitting quietly at the far end of the Administration Building.
SMS NOTIFICATION
The school is now utilising an SMS system to notify parents of any unexplained absence. If you receive a text message stating your child’s absence is unexplained, you can reply via text, stating your child’s name, and reason for absence. If you believe your child should be present at school, please phone the office immediately on 4120 8000.
EARLY DEPARTURE
Children leaving school early must be picked up from the office. Parents may ring in advance to arrange for their child/ren to be ready for collection, or send a note to the class teacher. Your child will be given an early departure slip from the office. Please minimise disruptions to teaching and learning by organising early departures in advance and for break times.
Student Attendance - Same Day Absence Notification
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department of Education and for the Queensland Government.
At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parent or carer via text message when a student's absence is unexplained after the first roll marking of the day.
As home and school work together, student safety will be increased. Here are some guidelines to make this process more efficient:
- Notify the school by phone, QParents or email before 9:00am if your student is going to be absent that day. Please give a brief explanation for the absence.
- If you receive a text message regarding an unexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text, QParents or phone call.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone number and other contact details are up-to-date on the school records. This is critical, as we need to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
- If your student arrives late to school, they must go to the office for a late pass before going to their classroom. If they are leaving early, a leave pass must be obtained from the office.

Welcome to Term 2. I hope you took some time over the break to refresh and recharge.
Term 2 is full of exciting adventures and what a lovely way to kick start the term with an ANZAC Day service. I will be working at MSHS this year and will unfortunately miss our ANZAC Service at Tinana but I am sure it will be a thoughtful and respectful presentation as usual. Congratulations to all staff and students involved you always make Tinana proud.
Speech and Drama Eisteddfod will be in Term 3. Our year 1-4 teachers have graciously offered half hour rehearsal times which will allow every Tinana student in these grades the opportunity of performing in the Eisteddfod. This time of the year will be a stretch for our students, but they will learn to ‘get along’, they will grow in confidence, and they will learn persistence and resilience during rehearsal times. This is an invaluable experience offered to our students and I am grateful to a school community who are willing to support the arts and encourage students in public speaking.
KINDNESS CHALLENGE: our kindness challenge for WEEK 1 is to REMEMBER OUR MANNERS. Especially in the week where our nation commemorates ANZAC Day, it’s a lovely time to reflect on the freedom we have in our country and to be grateful for the journey it has taken to enjoy that freedom. Week one is all about manners, like saying ‘thank you.’ WEEK 2 is about GETTING ALONG. We can share a smile with others and greet people in our school community using friendly words and friendly gestures. This is just one simple way we can ‘get along’ with others.
HOLIDAYS. I spent the holidays helping out west with those who have been impacted by the floods. Our school contributed some books to a school that was impacted, and the residents of Adavale were very grateful. There are some truly heartwarming stories we heard during the holidays. Feel free to grab me and ask me to share some to warm your heart.
PLAYGROUP: Play group continues from Monday of week 2 this term at the Powerhouse from 9:30-11. Feel free to check it out if you haven’t already. For those who have been, I look forward to seeing you on Monday.
Have a wonderful week. I look forward to seeing you in week 3.
