State School Emergency Management PlansÂ
As communicated via SMS earlier today Tinana SS is open as usual on Thursday and Friday.Â
Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. Every Queensland State School has a comprehensive Emergency Management Plan in place. This plan includes the management of emergency drills and responses to natural disasters. Some key points:
- Emergency Management Plan: Each school has a detailed plan to handle various emergencies, including fire drills, lockdowns, and natural disasters such as floods and cyclones.Â
- Support from Regional Staff: The operation of these plans is supported by regional staff from the Department of Education and QBuild. They provide essential resources and guidance to ensure the plans are effective and carry out any procedures required to ensure safety on school sites.Â
- Communication Channels: It is crucial to keep your mobile and email details up to date. These are the primary communication channels used to inform you about any emergency situations and updates. These can be changed through QParents or email admin@tinanass.eq.edu.au
We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community safe. If circumstances develop next week that impact on school operations the above communication channels will be used to keep parents/carers informed. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Â
150th Tinana StoriesÂ
Photo stories are being developed for display at the 150th Open Morning on May 31. These will include photos of current students and school life in 2025. Did you know that current Prep students will be ‘Class of 2031’?Â
Contributions are invited from past students to share a photo of their story to be included in Photo stories titled ‘ Graduates of 2000s’, ‘Graduates of 1980s-90s’ etc. We hope that these photos will celebrate the stories of our graduates and community connections. For example their might be a family of graduates with their children who are not enrolled at school. These photos will only be display onsite at the Open Morning and then will remain part of school history. Please email your photo to events@tinanass.eq.edu.au with a time caption by April 30.  If you have any queries please email the events@ address. Â

MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL
Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school for any purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the office and is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade and particular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly marked on the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are available at the office for any payments. Parents that prefer to deposit the funds directly into the school bank account are requested to advise the office of the deposit and to use the student surname and invoice number as the payment reference. As large amounts of money pass through the school office it becomes difficult and time consuming to identify payments without this information.
Invoices via Email
You should now be receiving all your child’s invoices via email. If you need to provide the office with an updated email address, please do so as soon as possible, as some school notes and information will also be sent via email.Â
REFLECTION LETTERS are also being sent out via e-mail.
ABSENCES
Please Phone 4120 8066 and leave a message on the Absence Line in the event of a student being absent. Please phone each day your child is absent from school unless the office has been previously advised of the absence. Verbal messages by the student are not sufficient. This prevents any misunderstanding and ensures the safety of your child. Please note that, by law, we are required to report any long term unexplained absences from school which may then be investigated by the police. Â
Â
LATE ARRIVAL
The school day begins at 8:45am and all staff will begin instruction at this time. Arrivals after 8:45am are considered to be late. Late arrival should be accompanied by a note but parents may ring the office with this information. Students must first report to the office to obtain a late slip that is to be given to their teacher.
EARLY ARRIVALS
Please be aware that there are NO staff members on duty before 8 am. We have more students arriving before this time. If there is a legitimate reason for students to be at school before 8am, then contact the office to make arrangements. These students must then follow the rules by sitting quietly at the far end of the Administration Building.
SMS NOTIFICATION
The school is now utilising an SMS system to notify parents of any unexplained absence. If you receive a text message stating your child’s absence is unexplained, you can reply via text, stating your child’s name, and reason for absence. If you believe your child should be present at school, please phone the office immediately on 4120 8000.
Â
EARLY DEPARTURE
Children leaving school early must be picked up from the office. Parents may ring in advance to arrange for their child/ren to be ready for collection, or send a note to the class teacher. Your child will be given an early departure slip from the office. Please minimise disruptions to teaching and learning by organising early departures in advance and for break times.Â
Student Attendance - Same Day Absence Notification
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department of Education and for the Queensland Government.
At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parent or carer via text message when a student's absence is unexplained after the first roll marking of the day.
As home and school work together, student safety will be increased. Here are some guidelines to make this process more efficient:
- Notify the school by phone, QParents or email before 9:00am if your student is going to be absent that day. Please give a brief explanation for the absence.
- If you receive a text message regarding an unexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text, QParents or phone call.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone number and other contact details are up-to-date on the school records. This is critical, as we need to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
- If your student arrives late to school, they must go to the office for a late pass before going to their classroom. If they are leaving early, a leave pass must be obtained from the office.
- Before school Running Club M/T/Th/F
- Thursdays Term 1  - Swimming - 5M & 5K students must be at School by 8:30 to get ready for departure.                Â
- Wednesday 5th March - P &C Teddy Bear’s Picnic for Prep families
- Friday 7th March - Clean up Schools Day 11am at the library with Mrs
Hooper. 8:50am 4-6 Parade - 12th-24th March - NAPLAN test window
- Tuesday 25th March - P&C AGM and General Mtg
- Thursday 27th March - Easter Treat P&C Fundraiser 2nd Break
- Friday 4th April - Interhouse Cross Country

Hi All,
we are half way through term 1 already and the tuckshop is humming along nicely. We have introduced a BBQ sausage on bread to the menu, but only available on a Monday. These have been very popular and available to order on Qkr.
Speaking of Qkr, a number of people have been having issues ordering, particularly on a Friday. This is due to the sheer volume of traffic trying to checkout at the same time. There are 2 options with this, order the night before when there is less traffic, or persevere and keep trying. It will work, it just might take a few attempts.
Next month will be our annual Pantry Drive, more info will be sent out next week.
Once again, thank you for supporting the tuckshop, supporting the P & C, that supports your children.

National War Animals Commemoration service
Last week Tinana School Captains Daniel & Ryder did a poetry reading as part of the first National War Animals Commemoration service.
HARMONY DAYÂ
Harmony Day/ Week is coming up. Harmony Week in Australia will be celebrated March 18-24 with Harmony Day celebrated nationally on March 21.  Â
It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.Â
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.Â
Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.Â

Above are some fascinating statistics about Australia's diversity that can be good conversation-starters:Â

KINDNESS IS COOL AT TINANA STATE SCHOOLÂ
Our week 6 Kindness Challenge involves showing kindness to our auxiliary staff.  We have the absolute privilege of learning in a beautiful environment. Week 6 is a great time to thank our awesome and hard-working staff who keep the outside and inside of our school environment so special. Perhaps we can go out of our way to thank them, or make a card, or even leave a message on the boards in our classrooms.Â
Â
Our week 7 challenge is one I am sure that all our parents will love. It’s all about being kind to our family. This might look like doing homework or chores WITHOUT COMPLAINING. It might look like not whinging if a sibling has first turn at something or shotguns the favourite seat in the car etc. Such small things won’t be remembered in 5 years time so they shouldn’t be worth complaining and whinging about. A gentle reminder at the beginning of this week or each day of this week might be a useful proactive way to encourage your children to think about this especially this week – and it’s also good to ‘catch them doing something good’ and praise them for it.Â
Â
Play at the Powerhouse continues each Monday from 9:30-11. We have a different theme each week and begin with some settling in time on our play equipment and obstacle course followed by a sit down story time and song before going into a separate space and engaging in some activities promoting language, play skills and gross and fine motor development. It is a whole heap of fun and I am genuinely enjoying each week and getting to know the youngest members of our school community. I have attached some images of our ‘Dinosaur Themed Activities’ from last week.Â
Have a wonderful week.Â

Tinana State school is currently preparing for our students in year 3 & 5 to sit the National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests which will be held from 12 March – 24 March 2025.
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
NAPLAN questions are aligned with the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy, and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with teachers.
NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national
measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
Students and parents wishing to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN can visit the public demonstration site on the NAP website. Some
past NAPLAN papers are also available.
