As part of helping students to #DoYourBest we strive to build a sense of belonging and community belonging among our students, staff and families. This Friday at parade our school community will celebrate the induction of the 2025 Student Leaders. The P&C Association is preparing a special welcome for Prep 2025 students and their families with a ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ on March 5. These are just a few recent examples of how this work underlies the activities of a school.
Tinana SS has an Enrolment Management Plan and there has already been enquiries about Out of Catchment enrolments for Prep 2026. Due to this strong interest, we will be emailing a information link to existing school families for them to advise of any Prep 2026 siblings; both in catchment and out of catchment enrolments. Please note that under the TSS Enrolment Management Plan siblings of out of catchment enrolled students must still go through the out of catchment enrolment process. It is essential that existing parents/carers start the out of catchment process as soon as possible to ensure their Prep 2026 student does not miss out on a place. We are also working on streamlining the enrolment process for our existing school families and request return of this information by the end of this term.
Tinana 150th 31.05.2025
Can you spare some time to assist with preliminary tasks or event set up? A new email address has been established events@tinanass.eq.edu.au Please email name, and best contact details along with what you can assist with. An RSVP form will come out through the newsletter later in the term.
The 150th will be on the agenda at the first P&C meeting of the year – next Tuesday February 25 at 6pm.
Home- School Partnerships
This Thursday the School Council will meet to look at the 2025 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). AIPs are used by state schools to identify particular focus areas for improvement each year. The focus may come from an internal or external context. The 2025 improvement areas are:
- The implementation of version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in English and Maths
- Further development of school-wide teaching concepts of students social-emotional learning.
The social emotional learning in state schools is drawn from the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum. Personal and Social Competencies ( see more here)
They are embedded in school subjects are also taught through the explicit teaching of expected behaviours related to learning and being part of larger social groups.

MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL
Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school for any purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the office and is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade and particular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly marked on the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are available at the office for any payments. Parents that prefer to deposit the funds directly into the school bank account are requested to advise the office of the deposit and to use the student surname and invoice number as the payment reference. As large amounts of money pass through the school office it becomes difficult and time consuming to identify payments without this information.
Invoices via Email
You should now be receiving all your child’s invoices via email. If you need to provide the office with an updated email address, please do so as soon as possible, as some school notes and information will also be sent via email.
REFLECTION LETTERS are also being sent out via e-mail.
ABSENCES
Please Phone 4120 8066 and leave a message on the Absence Line in the event of a student being absent. Please phone each day your child is absent from school unless the office has been previously advised of the absence. Verbal messages by the student are not sufficient. This prevents any misunderstanding and ensures the safety of your child. Please note that, by law, we are required to report any long term unexplained absences from school which may then be investigated by the police.
LATE ARRIVAL
The school day begins at 8:45am and all staff will begin instruction at this time. Arrivals after 8:45am are considered to be late. Late arrival should be accompanied by a note but parents may ring the office with this information. Students must first report to the office to obtain a late slip that is to be given to their teacher.
EARLY ARRIVALS
Please be aware that there are NO staff members on duty before 8 am. We have more students arriving before this time. If there is a legitimate reason for students to be at school before 8am, then contact the office to make arrangements. These students must then follow the rules by sitting quietly at the far end of the Administration Building.
SMS NOTIFICATION
The school is now utilising an SMS system to notify parents of any unexplained absence. If you receive a text message stating your child’s absence is unexplained, you can reply via text, stating your child’s name, and reason for absence. If you believe your child should be present at school, please phone the office immediately on 4120 8000.
EARLY DEPARTURE
Children leaving school early must be picked up from the office. Parents may ring in advance to arrange for their child/ren to be ready for collection, or send a note to the class teacher. Your child will be given an early departure slip from the office. Please minimise disruptions to teaching and learning by organising early departures in advance and for break times.
Student Attendance - Same Day Absence Notification
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the Department of Education and for the Queensland Government.
At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parent or carer via text message when a student's absence is unexplained after the first roll marking of the day.
As home and school work together, student safety will be increased. Here are some guidelines to make this process more efficient:
- Notify the school by phone, QParents or email before 9:00am if your student is going to be absent that day. Please give a brief explanation for the absence.
- If you receive a text message regarding an unexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text, QParents or phone call.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone number and other contact details are up-to-date on the school records. This is critical, as we need to be able to contact you in case of emergency.
- If your student arrives late to school, they must go to the office for a late pass before going to their classroom. If they are leaving early, a leave pass must be obtained from the office.

Tinana State school is currently preparing for our students in year 3 & 5 to sit the National Assessment Program Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests which will be held from 12 March – 24 March 2025.
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
NAPLAN questions are aligned with the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy, and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with teachers.
NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national
measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
Students and parents wishing to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN can visit the public demonstration site on the NAP website. Some
past NAPLAN papers are also available.

Hi all, Firstly, a massive thank you to our new volunteers that have put their hands up to help out the tuckshop. We are back up to a full menu now as our new helpers are very fast learners. If these ladies hadn't come on board, we may not be operating, so please thank our volunteers. We are always looking for more helpers to come on board as 'fill-ins' when people can't make it. Anyway enough of that, thank you all, for supporting the tuckshop with your orders already this year. Last year we had over 7200 orders, lets see if we can beat that this year.
I have just introduced a Monday Only special of a sausage sizzle for every Monday. Choose between a pork or Bbq Sausage on a piece of bread for only $3 (sauce extra) all details are on Qkr, These sausages are supplied by our butcher (meat @ Westside), not from a super market.
Big thanks again to the new members of the Tuckshop team and a big thanks to you for supporting the tuckshop.

Hi everyone,
GET CONNECTED AT TINANA – because BELONGING at school really makes a difference.
There are so many ways to get connected to our school community. Being connected is not about having mobile phones and computers and checking our Facebook pages and newsletters – ALTHOUGH THESE ARE IMPORTANT. It’s about knowing you can get support that you will be listened to, and that you can work together with school staff to help your child learn and develop. Working together to care for children is the best way we as a school community can help your children to learn and develop. We have fantastic teams at Tinana – all of them are positive ways to contribute to making our school community the fabulous one that it is. They are also a great way to meet new friends. Why not check out: Tuckshop, uniform shop or P&C. There is sure to be a group that will welcome you with open arms.
KINDNESS IS COOL AT TINANA STATE SCHOOL
Our kindness Goal for Week 4 includes all the different ways we can demonstrate kindness to our class. It might be having good manners, sharing a smile, lining up responsibly or being quiet during learning time. It might also look like picking up rubbish off the floor – even if it isn’t yours.
Our Week 5 challenge is all about being an active listener. Listening is something we do with our whole body. Whether we are at home, in the car, on the sport field or in class, we use our whole body to actively listen. This involves our eyes, hands, physical body and our minds. Perhaps this is a good week to have a conversation with your child about what this might look like at home. It’s always helpful to grab your child’s attention before giving them instructions by calling their name and establishing eye contact. It’s a good reminder for us also to be active listeners with our family…..I know this is often a struggle for me.
Play at the Powerhouse
Play at the Powerhouse got off to a great start last week. We looked at animals and attention span. This Monday will be all about colours and the concept of ‘same and different.’ If you have a child that isn’t old enough for Prep, you are welcome to join us Monday 9:30-11:00. For more information, please email me:
amanda.waterson@suchaplaincy.org.au
How to access the Chaplaincy Service
If you would like me to speak with your child, a new permission form needs to be completed each year. You can email me at the above email address to learn more or speak with your child’s class teacher.
Have a wonderful week – remember that every day counts.
